The Art of Sitting: Choosing the Right Stool for Your Space
The presence of the perfect counter stool can truly transform your home experience. Whether you're entertaining guests, seeking a cozy ambiance for cherished moments with loved ones, or simply enjoying a meal, the right seating can elevate any occasion. Now, you may be wondering, which style is the best choice for my space?
This client space features the Nixon Counter Stool in Brown Synthetic Leather. View the full project here.
The Nixon Counter Stool
This versatile stool is designed with a comfortable and supportive shell that is curved to provide extra comfort. The stool also includes a removable seat cushion in a neutral color palette. Available in a variety of fabrics and colour choices.
1. Understanding your space
Understanding the space you have is crucial. When selecting a stool, every detail matters, from height to fabric type. Consider whether your space is an open concept or a separate room, as this can influence your furniture choices. In open spaces, options like stools with backs, swivels, or larger chairs work well. In closed spaces, backless, stationary choices are often a better fit. In terms of the number of stools you'll need, a good rule of thumb to follow is to allow 24 to 30 inches for each stool to give ample seating space, depending on the style you choose.
Things you’ll need to consider when purchasing stools:
The height of your counter
The size of the stool you’re looking for
The number of stools you’ll need
The design of your space

2. Considering the function
The right stool choice can foster lively social interaction among guests, family, and friends. If you tend to host a lot, consider whether you prefer socializing in the kitchen which you prep, or if you prefer your guests to congregate in other living areas. To cultivate a sociable atmosphere within the dining space, opt for bar stools that facilitate easy flow, such as low-back swivel stools, promoting fluid conversation and movement.
Conversely, if you aim to encourage socialization elsewhere in the house, choosing full-back, stationary bar stools will offer mealtime comfort while minimizing movement for prolonged conversations.
